After a complete reimagining, &Beyond’s six-suite Phinda Vlei Lodge has reopened in South Africa’s Phinda Private Game Reserve, pairing wetland-front private pools with new sand forest e-biking and in-suite wellness treatments.
&Beyond has reopened Phinda Vlei Lodge in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province following a complete reimagining. Set between rare sand forest and a wildlife-drawing wetland known locally as a vlei, the six-suite lodge sits within the 29,866-hectare &Beyond Phinda Private Game Reserve, and now pairs private plunge pools with interiors rooted in KwaZulu-Natal craft.
Phinda Vlei has long been one of the reserve’s most intimate lodges, and the redesign leans further into that scale. With only six suites, it welcomes children aged 12 and older, positioning it toward couples, milestone celebrations and families travelling with older kids, a narrower brief than Phinda’s larger family lodges, and one that suits travellers seeking a quieter, more private base for Big Five game drives.
Each 173-square-metre suite has been extended with a larger bedroom and sitting area opening onto a private sala and deck, a private pool overlooking the wetland, a separate dressing room, a personal bar and coffee station, and an ensuite bathroom with both a bath and indoor and outdoor showers. A new library anchors the main guest areas.
“Some of the most memorable safari moments are not the ones guests go looking for, but the ones that find them,” says Brendan Streak, &Beyond’s Managing Director for South Africa Lodges. “The reimagining of Phinda Vlei has allowed us to build around that idea. Spaces draw guests outdoors and keep them connected to the landscape, while wildlife continues to arrive and pass through. The safari does not end when the game drive does.”
For safari travellers from Asia, a Phinda safari typically routes through Johannesburg before a short onward connection into KwaZulu-Natal, a longer haul than East or Southern African staples, which makes the lodge’s slower, sand-forest pace (guided walks, e-biking trails, in-suite Healing Earth treatments) an appealing draw for a milestone trip rather than a quick add-on.
Twice-daily game drives cover Phinda’s Big Five terrain and rarer sightings such as the suni antelope, while reserve-wide options extend to night drives, walking safaris, birding and rhino, elephant and pangolin conservation activities.
The redesign also carries a sustainability brief, with FSC-certified hardwoods in the flooring, decking and cladding, reduced thatch coverage for better insulation, and locally crafted timber and woven details made by Zulu artisans.
