Spanning some 22,000 square metres, Songtsam Linka Kunming has been designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Wang Shu, whose practice is celebrated for its poetic reinterpretation of vernacular Chinese traditions. At the new hotel, Wang Shu works with Songtsam’s Himalayan cultural ethos — drawing on snow-capped mountains, sacred lakes and high-altitude craft traditions — to produce a property that feels simultaneously contemporary and deeply considered.
Layered planter boxes filled with trees and flowering shrubs bring the exterior to life, while inside, natural materials — stone, timber, woven textiles, handcrafted decorative elements — sourced from across Yunnan and the Tibetan Plateau create an atmosphere of grounded, unhurried luxury.
Rooms Rooted in Himalayan Tradition
Songtsam Linka Kunming offers 53 guestrooms and suites, including three standalone Villa Suites named Kawagebo, Chenresig and Namcha Barwa that honour sacred mountains across the three regions where Songtsam operates: Yunnan, Tibet and Sichuan. Rooms range from 51 to 202 square metres and have been designed with the same understated intention that characterises the brand’s remote lodges: natural light, tranquil interiors, and a quietly confident Tibetan aesthetic.
Tibetan carpets woven with motifs of sacred birds, mythical creatures and lotus flowers anchor each room, while handcrafted wallpapers, ceramics, vases and textiles have been selected to echo the landscapes beyond the windows. The effect is one of a contemporary retreat that is, nonetheless, deeply rooted in tradition — a cultural salon, as Songtsam describes it, of the Himalayas.
Culture, Dining and Wellness
Beyond its accommodation, Songtsam Linka Kunming has been conceived as a fully realised lifestyle destination. The ground-floor Lobby and Reading Lounge display works by contemporary artists Song Ling and Lin Haizhong, whose respective journeys through Yunnan and Tibet inform paintings that capture the eternal, ever-shifting beauty of the natural world. An outdoor courtyard offers space for reflection, while terraces — including a dedicated tea deck — afford views across Dianchi Lake and the Western Hills.
Dining is equally ambitious. The hotel’s signature restaurant, Jing, is an elegant, nine-room private dining destination helmed by Michelin-recognised chef Huang Jinghui, whose menu offers elevated contemporary interpretations of Cantonese and Chaoshan cuisine.
Additional venues include Chumekha, a bright, window-wrapped Western restaurant; Horizon, a Chinese restaurant with indoor and terrace dining; a Wine Cellar; a banquet hall; and Chez Le Soleil, which focuses on Vietnamese and South-East Asian cuisine.
The wellness programme is anchored by Songtsam’s Movement Science Program, a therapeutic approach targeting the postural and muscular challenges of modern urban life through movement-based practices and targeted bodywork. A spa, yoga room, fitness centre and indoor swimming pool complete the holistic experience, alongside cultural programming and a retail concept designed to draw in the wider Kunming community.
