Brilliantly located, beautifully redesigned, and deeply rooted in Singapore’s cultural story, the Grand Hyatt Singapore remains one of Asia’s most compelling luxury addresses.
You always know your trip to a familiar city is going to go well when you book a hotel where you’ve only forged fond memories, where you know the service is seamless, the rooms are quiet retreats from a busy day, and where the intimacy you have with the property from past visits, while by no means safeguarding your entire trip from disruption, certainly gives you an edge.
For me, a Singapore regular, just such a house of slumber is the Grand Hyatt Singapore, a property that has occupied a singular position in this city’s luxury landscape for decades, and which, following a comprehensive redesign of its rooms and public spaces, has never felt more relevant. I’ve been fortunate enough to have stayed here a handful of occasions, and on each return I find myself wondering why I ever consider anywhere else.
An Enviable Location
The Grand Hyatt Singapore sits on Scotts Road, at the intersection of Orchard Road and the quieter, greener streets that lead towards Tanglin and the Botanic Gardens — a location that is, in the truest sense, the heart of the city. Everything Singapore offers the discerning traveller is within reach (often on foot): the great shopping corridors of Orchard, the cultural institutions of the Civic District, the hawker centres of Newton and beyond.
And yet the Grand Hyatt manages, with considerable architectural grace, to hold the noise of the city at bay, sheltering weary urbanites behind a curtain of curated serenity. Step inside, and the world slows and the noise of one of Asia’s biggest cities simply evapourates.
Rooted in Place: Heritage and Culture
What distinguishes the Grand Hyatt Singapore from the broader field of Singapore’s best luxury hotels is its genuine investment in the story of the place it occupies. This is a hotel that takes Singapore seriously as a living cultural landscape, not merely a backdrop for five-star amenities.
The hotel’s new heritage walking tour is the most visible expression of this commitment. Guided by a knowledgeable local who brings the layers of the city’s history to life — the Peranakan shophouses of the surrounding streets, the colonial architecture of the Civic District, the stories of the communities that shaped modern Singapore — it’s the kind of experience that fundamentally changes how you see a destination (even one you’ve visited countless times before).
Guests return to the lobby not just refreshed but genuinely illuminated, carrying with them a richer understanding of the extraordinary place they’re visiting. In an era when travel risks becoming an exercise in surface-level experience, this kind of depth matters.
A New Look for a City Icon
Of course, this is all aided by the hotel’s multi-year redesign, which was completed in August last year and which seamlessly blended design, culture, gastronomy, wellbeing, and sustainability initiatives with the introduction of new elements like the Grand Living Room and the Wellness Haven.
Grand Hyatt Singapore’s 699 rooms and suites make up one of the largest premium hotel inventories in the city, with guest spaces spread across two distinct wings: The 407-room and suite Grand Wing, designed by Tokyo-based interior design firm Strickland, and the 292-room Terrace Wing by U.K.-based Grant Associates.
While the Grand Wing (where I’ve stayed previously) delivers a stay infused with Singaporean character, with rooms boasting open-concept layouts with plush sofa nooks, striking Patagonia stone bathrooms and Peranakan-inspired design accents, the Terrace Wing (above) features a serene resort ambiance iaccentuated by tropical greenery, koi ponds, cascading waterfalls and guestrooms in soothing neutral tones, ice-green marble accents, wooden furnishings, and window alcoves with daybeds (be sure to look out for the unique Garden Studio Rooms, which open directly into the wellness lawn and lap pool).

Meanwhile, the relocated Grand Club lounge (above), now perched on the mezzanine level and reserved for Club and suite guests, offers a striking space for reflection and connection, serving made-to-order breakfasts, all-day refreshments, and elegant evening cocktails.
A Room Worth Coming Home To
The newly redesigned King Bed Deluxe room I occupied on my most recent stay is a masterclass in considered luxury. The palette is warm and grounded — think natural tones and materials that speak to the region without resorting to cliché — and the layout has been conceived for the way people actually inhabit a hotel room: not as a space to pass through, but as one to genuinely enjoy spending time in.
The marble bathroom is, frankly, glorious: generous in scale, impeccably detailed, with a deep soaking tub and rain shower that make the prospect of an early morning far more agreeable than it has any right to be. The walk-in wardrobe (my wife’s favourite feature) is the kind of detail that separates a well-designed room from an exceptional one — ample, well-lit, and fitted with enough space to properly unpack for a stay of any length.
However, it’s the lounge chair, positioned near the window with the afternoon light falling across it in the most inviting possible way, that I find myself stealing moments between meetings in. There is something quietly civilised about a hotel that understands the value of a chair — a place for afternoon contemplation, for reading, for watching the city from a comfortable remove. The Grand Hyatt understands this. Entirely.
Breakfast: A Celebration of the Region
The Grand Hyatt Singapore’s breakfast is, without question, one of the finest I have encountered anywhere in Asia. What distinguishes it is not sheer abundance — though abundance there certainly is — but intention.
The spread, which takes place like culinary theatre at the StraitsKitchen off the main lobby, captures the full breadth of Singapore’s extraordinary culinary inheritance: the Chinese, Malay, Indian, and Peranakan influences that have, over generations, produced one of the world’s great food cultures.
Congee alongside laksa alongside roti prata alongside the most exceptional pastry selection this side of Paris. To eat breakfast here is to understand Singapore in miniature — its diversity, its ambition, its delicious refusal to settle for less than the best.
Of course, while arguably the most important, breakfast isn’t the only meal of the day and the Grand Hyatt has guests covered with an impressive culinary spectrum that ranges from the 120-seat Le Pristine Singapore (above), which presents the Southeast Asian debut of Michelin-recognised chef Sergio Herman, who blends Italian cuisine with Zeeland soul against moody, art-filled interiors (don’t miss the seafood orecchiette with langoustine and nduja), to Pete’s Place, a cherished institution since 1973 that has reopened under the helm of Puglia-native chef Salvatore and which features a new chef’s table, antipasti bar, private dining room, and a grand wine cellar.
Also not to be missed is Oasis, an all-day dining option perched poolside (it does great even barbecues); BRIX, the city’s iconic subterranean nightspot, which has reclaimed its status as a premier live entertainment venue complete with an island bar with live music stage, a dedicated wine bar, and a whisky bar; the oh-so-elegant Martini Bar (above), hidden away on the upper mezzanine; and 10|Scotts, a residential-style lounge that dishes up Mediterranean small plates. Also on the lobby level is The Shop, part cafe, part wine shop, part service centre.
The Pool: A Hidden Oasis
Mention of the Grand Hyatt’s outdoor pool to the uninitiated tends to produce mild surprise — the revelation that this urban tower contains, tucked within its architecture, a genuinely beautiful aquatic retreat. Surrounded by lush tropical planting, largely shielded from the street, and operating with a kind of unhurried calm that is rare in a city hotel, the pool is a genuine oasis. On a warm Singapore afternoon — which is to say, on any Singapore afternoon — it’s the most civilised place in the city to be.
The Gym: Seriously Comprehensive
For the fitness-minded traveller (among whose ranks I aspire to be), the Grand Hyatt Singapore’s wellness and fitness enclave — Damai — deserves special mention. This is not the token hotel gym with a row of treadmills and a stack of rusting dumbbells, but one of the most comprehensively equipped facilities of any hotel in the city. Cardio, free weights, Technogym resistance machines, and dedicated spaces for stretching and functional training are all present and impeccably maintained (Damai is also home to the first HYROX training club in Southeast Asia). Whatever your training preference, the Grand Hyatt will accommodate it.
Beyond the sweat-inducing activities, you’ll find signature wellness experiences like light therapy, Halo steam rooms infused with Himalayan salt, an air lounge hydro pool and the city’s only el-based Mind Body Therapy wall. In addition, a wide range of spa treatments are enhanced with The Tides and Ground, a curated selection of artisanal wellness products.
The Verdict
Singapore rewards the traveller who chooses their base with care, and the Grand Hyatt rewards that care in kind. It’s a hotel that succeeds on every level that matters: location, design, cultural depth, food, wellness, and — above all — the feeling, reliably delivered on every stay, that one is somewhere genuinely special. The redesigned rooms have elevated an already exceptional property to something that bears comparison with the very finest city hotels in Asia.
