The Silver Endeavour‘s itineraries cover both the standard Svalbard circuit — Isfjorden, Kongsfjorden, the northwest coast glaciers, and Hinlopenstretet — and occasional outer-island extensions to the remote Bear Island (Bjørnøya) to the south, one of the world’s great seabird islands with colonies of little auk, Brünnich’s guillemot, and Atlantic puffin numbering in the millions.
Optional helicopter excursions (weather permitting) to remote glacier surfaces and a dedicated deep-sea fishing programme in the Barents Sea are popular add-ons.
6. Quark Expeditions — Ultramarine
Adventure-focused polar specialist Quark Expeditions runs Svalbard expeditions aboard the purpose-built Ultramarine, with Zodiacs, helicopters, and kayaks accessing remote wildlife-rich coastlines inaccessible to larger ships.
The Ships
Ultramarine is Quark’s flagship polar expedition ship, carrying 200 guests with a PC6 ice class rating. Its standout feature is two twin-engine Airbus H145 helicopters—included in the fare—enabling flightseeing and remote landings beyond Zodiac range.
Twenty Zodiacs deploy from an internal hangar for spontaneous wildlife encounters. Spacious suites, two restaurants, and comprehensive wellness facilities ensure genuine comfort. More adventure-focused and activity-driven than Silversea or Hurtigruten, it’s built for guests who prioritise access over elegance.
Accommodation
Quark’s Ultramarine offers 102 outside cabins across eleven categories, with around 60% featuring private balconies. Entry-level Balcony Suites run 226 sq ft; Deluxe Balcony Suites add a separate tub and shower. Explorer Suites are spacious but balcony-free. Penthouse and Terrace Suites offer upgraded layouts and double-sized balconies. The Ultra Suite (446 sq ft) and Owner’s Suite (563 sq ft) include walk-in closets and powder rooms. Solo Panorama Cabins and triple-share Explorer Cabins cater for solo travellers.
Dining
Dining on Ultramarine is solid and well-regarded, though more functional than fine—this is emphatically an expedition ship rather than a floating restaurant.
The primary venue is Balena Restaurant on Deck 5, a bright, bow-facing space with floor-to-ceiling windows and a mix of communal tables and smaller arrangements for couples and families. Breakfast and lunch are served buffet-style, with pop-up stations at lunch offering stir-fry, pasta, and rotating daily options. Dinner is a multi-course, plated affair with a rotating menu of soups, salads, mains, and desserts, supported by an always-available menu of reliable standbys—steaks, burgers, salads.
Bistro 487 on Deck 7 is designed as an indoor/outdoor casual option but has not consistently been operational. When available, it offers a more relaxed daytime dining alternative with terrace seating.
The Ultramarine offers honest expedition catering rather than luxury cuisine. There’s no fine-dining supplement, no tasting menus, and no butler in-suite service. Everything is included in the fare.
Wellness
Quark’s Ultramarine‘s wellness offering is compact but well-conceived, all concentrated on Deck 7 with floor-to-ceiling windows throughout—so every activity happens against a backdrop of Arctic scenery. The Tundra Spa has two treatment rooms (above) offering a full menu of massages, facials, and body treatments. It’s small, so demand can outpace availability on longer sailings; booking early onboard is advisable. Heated loungers and a relaxation area complete the space.
The popular sauna sits adjacent to the spa with panoramic windows—a genuine highlight and one of the better spots on the ship for quiet contemplation between landings, while the fitness centre is equipped with Technogym machines—treadmills, cross trainers, bikes, and strength equipment—plus free weights and a resistance band wall. Quality is high and the views are extraordinary. A yoga studio shares space with the sauna, used for informal sessions and stretching classes run by the expedition team.
Itineraries & Excursions
One critical distinction upfront: Ultramarine‘s twin helicopters do not operate on Svalbard voyages due to local regulations. This significantly changes the excursion proposition compared to the ship’s Antarctic or Arctic Canada sailings—Zodiacs are the primary means of off-ship exploration.
That said, the Svalbard programme is still exceptional. The expedition is built around exploring the full coastline of Spitsbergen—the largest island in the archipelago—with a focus on wildlife, glaciers, and remote landings in places few humans have walked. Zodiac cruising is the backbone of every day, taking guests past towering sea cliffs, calving glaciers, and into fjords inaccessible by larger vessels. Landings are opportunistic and flexible, adjusted daily based on ice conditions and wildlife sightings.
Meanwhile, wildlife watching is the expedition’s primary draw, with polar bears, walrus, Arctic fox, reindeer, and Svalbard’s extraordinary birdlife the targets—the sea cliffs host enormous colonies of Brünnich’s guillemot, Atlantic puffin, little auk, northern fulmar, and kittiwake. Expert naturalists guide every outing.
Hiking is also included, ranging from gentle coastal walks to more demanding ridge hikes across tundra, led by expedition guides, while Sea kayaking is available as a paid add-on (approximately US$1,795 per person for the full programme), with a single-session paddling excursion also available (approx. US$295) for less experienced guests wanting a taste on stable sit-on-top kayaks. Don’t forget to try the polar plunge—a brief, bracing swim in Arctic waters—is offered as an optional included activity for the committed.
7. Aurora Expeditions — Greg Mortimer and Sylvia Earle
Australian expedition specialist Aurora Expeditions offers 12- and 15-day Svalbard voyages in 2027 aboard small ships Greg Mortimer and Sylvia Earle, including specialist polar bear and photography-themed departures.
The Ships
Both are purpose-built sister ships sharing the same Ulstein X-BOW hull design—a wave-piercing prow that dramatically reduces pitch and swell, delivering smoother crossings than conventional hulls. The Greg Mortimer (2019) carries up to 130 expedition guests across 76 cabins, 85% with private balconies. Ice class 6 rated, she carries 15 Zodiacs and features fold-out hydraulic viewing platforms for unobstructed wildlife observation.
The Sylvia Earle (2022) is near-identical in design and capacity at 130 guests, adding a dedicated Citizen Science Centre allowing guests to contribute to active polar research programmes alongside the expedition team.
Accommodation
Both ships share the same cabin hierarchy. Accommodation is practical and comfortable rather than luxurious—this is an expedition line, not a luxury cruise line, and pricing reflects that. The Captain’s Suite is the top category, with a separate bedroom, generous living area, and large balcony, while Junior Suites offer additional space and a balcony. The majority of cabins are Balcony Staterooms across three categories distinguished by deck position and size—85% of all cabins have private balconies. Superior Balcony Staterooms on Deck 4 and 6 feature floor-to-ceiling windows and extra storage.
Aurora Staterooms are the entry-level option—twin or triple-share configurations with portholes rather than balconies, positioned close to the mudroom and Zodiac boarding platforms. These suit budget-conscious travellers or those who plan to spend every possible moment off the ship.
All cabins include en-suite bathrooms, ocean views, and access to the mudroom where wet expedition gear is stored and dried between landings—a practical touch that keeps staterooms comfortable.
Dining
Both ships follow the same two-restaurant model, with names differing between vessels. On Greg Mortimer, the main restaurant serves buffet-style breakfasts and lunches with à la carte dinners, joined by the Tuscan Grill—a reservations-required concept restaurant for a more intimate dinner experience. On Sylvia Earle, the equivalent pairing is Gentoo (main dining) and Rockhopper (the reservations-required steakhouse-style option).
The dining philosophy is consistent across both: hearty, well-executed food designed to fuel active expeditioners rather than impress food critics. Open seating encourages mixing between guests and expedition staff, which is very much part of the Aurora culture. Floor-to-ceiling windows ensure every meal has a view.
House wines, beers, and soft drinks are included with dinner—a meaningful inclusion. Tea, coffee, and snacks are available around the clock. The Captain’s Farewell is a highlight: informal drinks with complimentary cocktails and canapés followed by a three-course meal with the captain and expedition team.
Wellness
The wellness offering is consistent across both ships, compact but thoughtfully considered for an active expedition clientele. Both ships have a gym with standard cardio and resistance equipment, available complimentary throughout the voyage. The sauna is a genuine highlight—Aurora actively recommends it post-polar plunge, and the combination of extreme cold followed by heat is very much in keeping with the line’s adventurous ethos.
Two outdoor Jacuzzis sit on the top deck on both ships, offering extraordinary views—soaking in 40-degree water while glaciers or Arctic coastline drift past is one of the more memorable onboard experiences. Complimentary and open to all. The Sylvia Earle has an additional advantage over Greg Mortimer: a heated outdoor pool, making it the more appealing of the two for guests who value water-based recovery. The Greg Mortimer has the Jacuzzis but no pool.
Both ships have a wellness centre offering massages and facial treatments at additional cost—small, one or two treatment rooms, so booking early onboard is advisable.

Aurora offers two distinct Svalbard itineraries for 2027, both operating under the Midnight Sun with all departures from Oslo.
The core Svalbard offering, operating aboard Greg Mortimer and Sylvia Earle run June 24, July 9, and August 8 and explores Spitsbergen’s coastline, fjords, and pack ice, with the aim of reaching close to 80-degrees north. Highlights include glacier fronts in Kongsbreen, tundra walking in Gnålodden, wildlife watching for polar bears on pack ice, walrus haul-outs, beluga whales, Arctic fox, and the extraordinary seabird colonies on Ossian Sarsfjellet.
The extended version aboard the Sylvia Earle, allows Aurora to slow the pace deliberately—lingering longer in quiet bays, returning to locations that weather or ice previously made inaccessible, and venturing into less-visited corners of the archipelago. It’s designed for guests who want maximum immersion rather than a highlights reel.
Every departure includes Zodiac cruising, landings ashore, guided walking and tundra hiking, wildlife and marine mammal watching, bird watching, scenic cruising along glacier fronts, photography guidance, and the polar plunge. Expert-led lectures on wildlife, ecology, history, and climate run throughout. Add-on activities include sea kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and polar snorkelling. All add-ons are booked in advance and categorised by difficulty from low-impact to advanced.
8. HX (Hurtigruten Expeditions) — MS Fram & MS Spitsbergen
HX operates MS Fram and MS Spitsbergen in Svalbard in 2027, with Zodiacs, kayaking, science programmes, and citizen science initiatives for deep wilderness access. This is a distinction from Hurtigruten iconic coastal route itinerary to Svalbard, which is focused on ports of call rather than remote landings.
The Ships
MS Fram (built 2007) is HX’s veteran Arctic staple — a purpose-built expedition ship with a functional, no-frills Norwegian character that recently benefitted from a fresh new look, with upgraded cabins and a state-of-the-art Science Centre. With space for 200 guests, the MS Fram was built for polar travel, and continues the spirit of the legendary Norwegian exploration vessel that once drifted through Arctic ice under great explorer Fridtjof Nansen.
Meanwhile, MS Spitsbergen (built 2009, refitted 2025) is the more refined option: smaller, and catering to 332 guests, she features contemporary Nordic interiors, heated bathroom floors, and a tighter guest-to-staff ratio that makes for a more intimate Svalbard experience.
Accommodation
Both ships share a similar cabin hierarchy, ranging from inside cabins up to top-tier Expedition Suites. MS Fram offers inside cabins, outside cabins on various decks, Mini Suites, and Grand Suites with private balconies. All suite categories come with premium bedding, seating areas, and access to the fine-dining Restaurant Lindstrøm while selected suites have private hot tubs on their balconies.
The smaller MS Spitsbergen has a similar tier structure: outside cabins across upper and lower decks, Mini Suites, an Grand Suite with private balcony, and the flagship Owner’s Suite — a two-room upper-deck suite with private balcony. Expedition Suites on both ships include Nespresso machines and binoculars. Both ships have wheelchair-accessible cabins. Suites generally face outward with wide windows designed for wildlife viewing.
Dining
Both ships include all meals and drinks in the fare, with food inspired by the regions they explore — seasonal ingredients, regional dishes, and sustainable seafood.
The MS Fram has two restaurants. Restaurant Aune is the main dining room covering all guests for breakfast, lunch, and dinner while Restaurant Lindstrøm is the fine-dining speciality restaurant (named after the favourite chef of Norwegian polar explorers) and is included for suite guests and available to others at extra cost. There’s also an outdoor BBQ and the Explorer Lounge & Bar for cocktails and panoramic views.
The MS Spitsbergen has Restaurant Aune as its main all-inclusive dining room, plus a casual snack and light-meal venue added in 2025 for between-landing hunger, and a takeaway service from Aune for in-cabin dining. The Explorer Lounge & Bar is also on board.
The key difference: Fram’s two-tier restaurant setup gives suite guests a dedicated fine-dining option, while Spitsbergen keeps things simpler with one main restaurant supplemented by casual options.
Wellness
The two ships are closely matched on wellness. Both offer a fitness room, a panoramic sauna on the upper deck, and two outdoor hot tubs — all with views of the Arctic scenery around them.
The MS Fram‘s gym is on Deck 7 and boasts panoramic windows, while the ship also has a dedicated wellness centre catering to both body and mind. Selected suites add private hot tubs on their balconies.
The MS Spitsbergen‘s gym is compact but well-equipped with treadmills, bikes, and weights — plus a ping pong table. Its sauna is perched high on the ship for maximum views, and the two open-air hot tubs each seat five. Balcony suites here can also include a private hot tub.

HX offers a comprehensive Svalbard season in 2027, including the 19-day Sublime Svalbard from Dover (April 2027) which sails via Norway’s spring fjords before reaching Svalbard; and the 16-day Sublime Svalbard from Hamburg (May 2027), the same concept but shorter, departing Hamburg and ending in Oslo. For travellers looking to maximise their time in the region, the 15-day Faroe Islands, Iceland, Spitsbergen — Northbound (May 2027) is an island-hopping itinerary running Bergen to Oslo, combining three distinct Arctic destinations in one voyage; while the 14-day Circumnavigating Svalbard: The Ultimate Expedition (multiple departures through August 2027) is the flagship itinerary and attempts to sail above 80-degrees North and circumnavigate the entire archipelago, including Nordaustlandet.
Included on every Svalbard voyage are daily small expedition boat trips explore coastlines, fjords, and ice edges — ideal for spotting seals, whales, and calving glaciers up close; Kayaking between icebergs’ guided hiking across tundra, glaciers, and Arctic landscapes, led by the Expedition Team; an e-bike tour in Longyearbyen covering the town’s coal-mining and polar heritage; and of course, plenty of wildlife watching in search of polar bears, walruses, Svalbard reindeer, Arctic foxes, whales (Humpback, Beluga, Minke, Bowhead, Narwhal), and over 40 seabird species including Puffins, Guillemots, and King Eiders.
Planning Your Luxury Svalbard Cruise
Svalbard’s expedition season runs from late May through September, with each month offering a different character of Arctic experience. Late May and June bring the most dramatic light — the midnight sun at full power, the snow still covering the mountain ridges, and the first spring wildlife activity (polar bears emerging with cubs, Arctic foxes in their white winter coats transitioning to summer blue). July is the height of the wildlife season: walrus haul-outs are at maximum density on the remote beaches of the northeast, seabird colonies are in full breeding activity, and the tundra’s brief Arctic summer covers the coastal plains in flowers of extraordinary delicacy.
August brings the first hints of autumn colour to the tundra and the beginning of the beluga whale migration through Svalbard’s western fjords. September is the most dramatic month for those who can tolerate lower temperatures — the first polar night begins to encroach, the northern lights become visible for the first time since spring, and the sea ice begins to reform in the north, concentrating polar bears on the southern shorelines.
The most critical choice in the Svalbard market is vessel capability versus onboard luxury: the most capable polar ships (the Le Commandant Charcot, the National Geographic Endurance) access the highest latitudes and the most remote wildlife encounters but require guests to accept a level of expedition austerity in their cabins; the most hotel-like vessels (including the Seabourn Pursuit and Venture) deliver the finest onboard experience but are limited to the more accessible sections of the archipelago.
