Sony has introduced a new 100-400mm super-telephoto zoom for full-frame Alpha cameras that’s perfect for first-time telephoto shooters.
Sony’s new FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS super-telephoto zoom lens for its full-frame Alpha E-mount cameras weighs just 654g, making it light enough to carry through a full day of shooting without the fatigue usually associated with reaching 400mm.
That weight is the headline. Super-telephoto lenses have historically asked a lot of the person carrying them; this one is pitched squarely at photographers who want the reach without committing to a lens that dominates their kit bag, including those picking up a telephoto zoom for the first time.
It handles well when handheld, frames quickly, and stays manageable on longer outings, whether that’s a morning spent tracking birds, an early-morning safari game drive, or a hike where the wildlife won’t wait for a tripod to go up.
At 400mm, photographers can close the distance on subjects too skittish or too far to approach — birds in flight, penguins on a distant iceberg, trains and aircraft in motion — while the compression effect that comes with super-telephoto focal lengths also opens up a different kind of landscape shot, pulling distant background elements visually closer to the foreground.
Pair the lens with Sony’s optional teleconverter and the reach extends to 800mm full-frame, or 1,200mm in APS-C mode, without adding a second lens to the bag.
Autofocus is built for subjects that move unpredictably: a linear motor drives fast, quiet focus tracking, and paired with Sony’s α9 III body, the lens supports continuous shooting with AF/AE tracking at up to roughly 120 frames per second — useful headroom for anyone shooting fast action where a single missed frame is the difference between a keeper and a miss.
In addition, built-in optical stabilization keeps handheld shots and video steady at the telephoto end, where camera shake is usually hardest to control.
The lens isn’t purely built for distance, either; it focuses close enough to shoot flowers, insects and other near subjects, so it doesn’t have to be swapped out the moment a compelling subject shows up nearby.
For anyone shooting outdoors regularly, Sony has built in dust and moisture resistance along with a customizable focus hold button, a focus mode/range switch and a zoom lock — quick, tactile controls meant to be adjusted without taking your eye off the viewfinder. A lens hood is included to guard against flare.
