Set on the European shore of the majestic Bosphorus Strait, in the vibrant Beşiktaş district, Çırağan Palace Kempinski stands both as a timeless testament to Istanbul’s imperial past and as the epitome of a contemporary luxury hotel, one that has welcomed everyone from Madonna, Sir Richard Branson and Zaha Hadid to Bill Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, Sophia Loren, Robert De Niro, Silvio Berlusconi and U2.
A Palace With a Past
What sets the Kempinski apart from the other five-star hotels that call this vibrant city home is that it’s housed, at least in part, in an actual palace. Built in the 19th century by Sultan Abdulaziz on land used as imperial residences since the 1600s, Çırağan Palace served as the residence of Ottoman sultans for decades and, like Istanbul itself, carries architectural influences from both Europe and Asia. With its sprawling gardens, opulent interiors and unparalleled views of the Bosphorus, it became a symbol of Ottoman grandeur.
Opened as a flagship property in 1991, most of the Kempinski’s rooms and amenities occupy a building adjacent to the palace itself, one last refreshed in 2023 by Toner Architects, who worked with Ottoman art expert Serdar Gülgün to elevate the property’s interiors to palatial levels. With classic design elements infused with a genuinely innovative flair, the renovation ensured the 317-room Kempinski remains as popular with locals, who descend on the property for special occasions, as it is with its well-heeled international clientele.
Wander the grounds, and that layered history is impossible to miss. The original palace building — restored at enormous expense after decades of neglect and a devastating fire in the 29th century — now houses the hotel’s most exclusive suites and function spaces, its gilded ceilings and marble stairwells preserved with evident care.
Walk from the lobby towards the water, and the transition from grand hotel to imperial residence happens almost without you noticing, the modern wings giving way gradually to the palace’s original stonework and wrought-iron detailing. Few hotels anywhere manage to wear their history this convincingly.
A Room Fit for a Sultan
When you book your room, try to secure one with a balcony facing the Bosphorus — you’ll thank me for years to come. My Grand Deluxe Çırağan Bosphorus View Room is beautifully appointed, with a king-sized four-poster bed, lavish linens and an elegant couch facing a small dining area. The marble-lined bathroom, stocked with Atelier Rebul toiletries, is every bit as impressive, while the spacious balcony proves the room’s true triumph: a front-row seat to the endless procession of cargo and pleasure boats making their way towards the Black Sea.
Suites Fit for Sultans
The hotel also boasts a series of suites adorned with Turkish motifs in the main building, ranging from the 100-square-metre Haseki Sultan Suite, dominated by shades of vibrant, lively yellow, to the 156-square-metre two-bedroom Pasha Suite, complete with its own private dining room and hammam.
For the ultimate royal reception, however, nothing quite compares to the eleven suites of the Palace wing. Chief among them is the 458-square-metre Sultan Suite, a lavish expanse that echoes the grandeur of the palace’s royal past and regularly ranks among the best hotel suites in the world, thanks to its opulent interiors, twelve-person dining room, hot-and-cold running butler service and magnificent views.
Guests staying in the suite also have access to a chauffeur-driven 1974 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow. Evidently it’s good to be the sultan.
An Urban Resort on the Bosphorus
Step outside the main hotel building and it becomes immediately apparent that Çırağan Palace Kempinski is as much an urban waterfront resort as it is a city hotel. The waterfront is dominated by a spectacular swimming pool, wreathed by sun loungers and manicured gardens. A short walk away sits the Sanitas Spa, tucked into a subterranean space that houses treatment rooms, an indoor pool and a traditional hammam, a genuinely restorative counterpoint to the bustle of the city beyond the palace gates.
It’s a rare thing for a hotel this central to feel this calm. Beşiktaş is one of Istanbul’s most energetic districts, home to a busy ferry terminal, a beloved football club and streets that hum well into the evening. However, the Kempinski’s gardens and high perimeter walls hold that energy at a comfortable distance. Guests can walk the palace grounds at dawn with barely another soul in sight, then be in the thick of the Bosphorus waterfront, or across the bridge in Ortaköy, within minutes. Few addresses in the city offer that particular combination of seclusion and access.
Dining Worthy of an Empire
Elevating the culinary experience to something close to an art form, Çırağan Palace Kempinski also hosts a repertoire of restaurants built to satisfy the most discerning palates. These include new arrival Rüya Istanbul, home to authentic Turkish hospitality and showcasing the rich, vibrant flavours of Anatolia, and Gazebo, a sublime lobby lounge inspired by the Ottoman gardens and home to the city’s most sought-after afternoon tea.
In the Palace wing, guests will also find Bellini, which pairs the Italian cooking of Sicilian chef Giovanni Vaccaro with majestic Bosphorus views (try the seafood black girasole with prawns, calimari and mussles).
For a truly unforgettable evening, though, book ahead for a terrace table at the Michelin-recommended Tuğra (above), which serves the Ottoman-inspired dishes of chef Emre Inanir against a backdrop of marble pillars and the palace’s decadent interiors (earning it three toques by Gault&Millau). The setting is nothing short of enchanting, and with intuitive service, an indulgent menu and the warm wind coming off the water, it’s remarkably easy to imagine yourself a sultan, enjoying a night in your empire’s capital.
The Verdict
Sprawling, frantic Istanbul is one of those cities where you need to choose where you base yourself with care, and Çırağan Palace Kempinski rewards that effort more generously than almost anywhere else in the city. It succeeds on every level that matters: location, history, design, dining and — above all — the sense, delivered reliably from arrival to departure, that one is somewhere genuinely extraordinary. Few hotels anywhere in the world can claim an actual Ottoman palace as part of their address, and fewer still wear that history as lightly, or as luxuriously.
I can’t think of anywhere in Istanbul I would rather stay.
