The studio behind some of the world’s most celebrated superyachts has set a new benchmark for hospitality at sea — with a brief that could only be described as ‘Christina O meets James Bond.’
When Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts announced its entry into the world of luxury yachting, the stakes were immediately clear. One of the most revered names in high-end hospitality would need a vessel worthy of its reputation — not simply a floating hotel, but an entirely new expression of what life at sea could mean.
That task fell to Tillberg Design of Sweden (TDoS), part of the Viken Group, whose Design & Brand Manifesto now animates every curve, suite and sun-drenched terrace of the 207-metre Four Seasons I.
Having embarked on its maiden voyage in the Mediterranean in March, Four Seasons I is already reshaping the conversation around luxury yacht travel. At 34,000 GT, she’s an extraordinary feat of design and engineering — a vessel conceived to feel, as TDoS puts it, like “a mirage from another era.”
A Design Brief Like No Other
Few creative briefs in the history of superyacht design have been so deliciously cinematic. Channelling the storied elegance of the legendary Christina O — the iconic yacht once owned by Aristotle Onassis — while carrying the sleek, forward-propelled energy of a James Bond production, TDoS set about crafting a vessel that is simultaneously timeless and thoroughly modern.
The exterior colour palette, appropriately, has an equally evocative backstory: it was chosen after a visit to the TDoS studio, where the vintage Porsches of Viken Group Co-Founder Fredrik Johansson inspired the final tone and character. The result is a silhouette of classical symmetry and refined detailing, set against a contemporary backdrop of floor-to-ceiling glazing and expansive terraces that dissolve the boundary between interior and ocean.
Working in close collaboration with Four Seasons and Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri from the project’s earliest stages, TDoS developed not only the exterior architecture and master planning but also the suite layouts, outdoor environments and the spectacular two-level transverse marina — designing the majority of onboard spaces throughout.
Engineering Transparency
Technically, Four Seasons I is as ambitious as it is beautiful. A central “Spine Concept” replaces the traditional perimeter structure with a central backbone, enabling near 360-degree glazing and uninterrupted ocean views from virtually every onboard space. Every suite faces the sea. Light floods the interiors. The horizon is always present.
The 20-metre aft pool with its raisable floor is both a technical triumph and an experiential centrepiece, allowing the space to shift between uses with effortless flexibility. Concealed lifeboat cover flaps keep the exterior visually pristine, while four-metre telescopic doors in the forward and aft top suites open entire living spaces directly to the ocean air.
The Iconic Funnel Suite
No single element captures the ambition of Four Seasons I quite like the Funnel Suite. Positioned at the forward-facing prow, the 929-square-metre suite commands sweeping 270-degree panoramic ocean views through dramatic curved glazing — among the most technically complex elements of the entire build.
“The funnel suite required close integration between architecture and shipyard engineering,” explains Johansson. “Its curved glazing was probably the most delicate exercise in combining design and engineering. Its exceptional position within the yacht, and the lift access from sea level, also required a complex balance between structure, circulation, privacy, views and guest experience.”
The result is a suite that is as much a piece of architecture as it is an accommodation — a jewel set at the prow of an already extraordinary vessel.
Residential Living at Sea
Across Four Seasons I‘s 95 suites, TDoS has drawn on the language of private seaside residences rather than conventional shipboard design. Materials were selected with the same care one might bring to a significant architectural commission: anigre wood panelling with an Astrakhan finish, solid parquet flooring, Brazilian aqua green quartzite in the bathrooms, and porcelain stoneware replicas that reduce the use of natural resources without sacrificing tactile or visual quality.
Every bed is oriented toward the sea. Above each, a sunbeam-inspired straw marquetry feature adds warmth and quiet drama. In the signature suites, terraces centre around private splash pools and generous sunbeds, while star constellation maps etched into stone coffee tables reward the curious with layers of discovery. In the loft suites, double-height volumes extend both inward and out onto the terrace — space that breathes, expands and connects.
Suites can be combined through interconnecting doors for flexible configurations, and guests can ascend by private lift from sea level directly to the Funnel Suite. Nothing, it seems, has been left to chance.
Service Woven Into Architecture
Perhaps most tellingly, the operational layout of Four Seasons I has been planned to make the brand’s legendary service culture feel invisible. Guest and crew circulation is entirely separate. Operational flows are engineered for discretion. Every guest interaction — every arrival, every request, every quiet moment — has been considered in the spatial planning from the outset.
It is, ultimately, what distinguishes Four Seasons I from even the finest superyachts afloat: a vessel in which architecture and hospitality are not merely compatible, but inseparable. TDoS has not simply designed a yacht. It has designed an experience — one that feels, at every turn, like it was made for you alone.
