China Airlines unveils a limited-edition Japanese menu with Fukuoka’s Takenoya izakaya and Osaka’s Marufuku Coffee.
China Airlines is elevating the journey home from Japan, unveiling a limited-edition onboard dining collaboration with two of Kyushu and Kansai’s best-loved culinary names.
From now until 30 September, passengers flying from Fukuoka and Osaka to Taiwan can sample a Japanese-inspired banquet crafted in partnership with Fukuoka izakaya Takenoya and Osaka café institution Marufuku Coffee.
The Taiwan-based carrier has form here: onboard dining collaborations have become something of a signature, and this latest pairing marks a fittingly celebratory moment, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of China Airlines’ Fukuoka route and the founding of Takenoya itself.
Takenoya, which first opened its doors in Hakata, Fukuoka, has built a devoted following across the Kyushu region for its grilled chicken skewers and chicken-led menu. On flights from Fukuoka to Taoyuan and Kaohsiung, Business Class travellers are treated to Kabayaki Grilled Eel, a Kyushu speciality of flaky eel brushed with a sweet-savoury glaze, while Economy Class diners are served Grilled Chicken Thigh and Chicken Meatball with Seaweed Rice, a comforting nod to the restaurant’s signature style.
Over on the Osaka route, the collaboration marks 20 years of China Airlines’ Taoyuan-Kansai service, with Marufuku Coffee, a café brand synonymous with the city, curating a menu of retro Japanese-Western fusion. Business Class passengers can expect a Japanese Omelette starter and a Shrimp Garden Salad with Sweet Corn Dressing, followed by a choice of Cantonese Braised Pork Belly with Steamed Rice or Classic Slow-braised Beef with Mashed Potatoes, served alongside Honey Bread and finished with a Coffee Roll Cake. Economy Class travellers finish with Marufuku Pudding, a silky, caramelised classic.
The initiative forms part of China Airlines’ wider push to diversify its inflight dining, with routes from Taiwan already benefiting from tie-ups including Da Wan Yakiniku, T+T, Little Tree Food and Double Moon, while dessert and beverage menus feature contributions from Le Ruban Pâtisserie, TenRen’s 913 King’s Oolong Tea and US import Peet’s Coffee.
For travellers threading Japan into a wider Asia itinerary, it’s a reminder that the flight itself can be part of the destination experience, particularly on routes where Business Class already delivers lie-flat comfort for the roughly two-and-a-half-hour hop between Kyushu or Kansai and Taiwan.
