Legendary architect Bill Bensley has opened his wildly imaginative estate, Hacienda Botanica, for exclusive private stays — but only for the right people.
One of the world’s most celebrated designers has decided to open the doors of his own home. Bill Bensley, the American-born, Bangkok-based architect behind more than 200 luxury hotels and resorts across 30 countries, is making his private Chiang Mai retreat available for the first time to outside guests — exclusively through a new collaboration with award-winning luxury travel company Smiling Albino.

The property, Hacienda Botanica, is not a hotel. It is Bensley’s personal residence: a sprawling, exuberantly designed estate set within lush botanical gardens on the outskirts of Chiang Mai that he shares with his partner, Jirachai Rengthong. It has, until now, remained entirely private. That is about to change — but only on Bensley’s own terms.
An Estate Unlike Any Other

Hacienda Botanica defies straightforward description. The estate comprises six distinct private villas capable of accommodating up to 12 guests, set within expansive botanical gardens that feel less like landscaped grounds and more like a living, breathing canvas. Sculptures emerge unexpectedly from the foliage. Antique pieces sit alongside playful artistic interventions. Indoor and outdoor living spaces dissolve into one another, inviting guests to move freely between design, nature, and discovery.
A sprawling pool anchors the grounds, while Bensley’s own private art studio and a greenhouse containing over one hundred varieties of flora add layers of immersion that no conventional hotel could replicate. Nothing is static. Nothing is standardised.

“It’s playful, a whole lot of wild, which is exactly how I like it,” says Bensley of the estate. “If you come here, I hope you explore, get lost, and maybe see the world a little differently when you leave.”
An Invitation, Not a Booking

The collaboration with Smiling Albino is deliberately conceived to preserve what makes Hacienda Botanica singular. Access is offered exclusively as a full private buyout — the entire estate reserved for a single group at a time — ensuring complete privacy and absolute freedom within the grounds. There are no other guests. No check-in desk. No room numbers.
Each stay is fully inclusive, covering accommodation, dining, beverages, and a programme of curated experiences. But beyond the practical details, the emphasis is firmly on the personal. Smiling Albino, which has built its reputation since 1999 on crafting story-driven journeys across Thailand and Southeast Asia, will shape each visit in close collaboration with the Hacienda Botanica team — tailoring the experience entirely around the interests, rhythm, and curiosity of each group.

Experiences extend well beyond the estate itself: cultural encounters, private dining, market explorations, countryside adventures, wellness rituals, and unexpected moments of discovery across Northern Thailand are all part of the design. No two stays, Smiling Albino insists, will unfold in the same way.
Designed for the Few

The experience is positioned for families, close friend groups, and multi-generational parties seeking time together that goes beyond the typical luxury holiday. Given the estate’s capacity of 12 guests and its full-buyout model, it is not a destination for solo travellers or couples seeking a quick escape. It is, by design, something rarer: a shared sanctuary, available to a very limited number of groups each year.
Hacienda Botanica sits within easy reach of Chiang Mai International Airport, offering privacy without remoteness. For those who prefer a more theatrical arrival, helicopter access can be arranged via a nearby landing point just minutes from the estate.
Who Is Bill Bensley?

For those unfamiliar with the name, Bensley is among the most influential figures in contemporary luxury hospitality design. Since founding his Bangkok-based studio, BENSLEY, in 1989, he has shaped some of the industry’s most iconic and visually arresting properties — work characterised by rich storytelling, deep sense of place, and a theatricality that refuses to take itself too seriously. His portfolio spans 30 countries and includes properties that have become destinations in their own right.
Beyond design, Bensley is also a committed conservationist and advocate for responsible tourism — a dimension of his work that aligns closely with Smiling Albino’s own philosophy of culturally embedded, community-conscious travel.
