From sunrise horse rides and wandering Arabian oryx to beautifully designed villas and memorable dining, Al Maha combines Emirati heritage with one of the UAE’s most remarkable wildlife experiences.
There is a point on the drive to Al Maha when the city simply gives way to the desert. The road becomes a gravel track, rolling dunes stretch into the distance and Arabian gazelles shelter beneath ghaf trees. Less than an hour after leaving one of the world’s busiest cities, the skyline had completely disappeared, replaced by an endless sweep of desert.
That contrast is one of Al Maha’s greatest strengths. Set within the 225-square-kilometre Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, this was the UAE’s first luxury desert resort when it opened in 1999. More than 25 years later, countless luxury desert camps and resorts have followed, but few possess the same authenticity.
Nothing here feels rushed or designed to impress for the sake of it. Rather than competing with its surroundings, Al Maha allows the landscape to speak for itself.
Your Own Desert Retreat
Stepping inside my Royal Villa Suite, it feels more like a private desert home than a hotel suite. Soaring canvas ceilings stretch above dramatic wooden furniture, richly coloured Persian rugs soften the stone floors and carefully chosen antiques give each room genuine character without tipping into cliché. Brass coffee pots sit in recessed alcoves and traditional textiles complete interiors that feel authentic rather than themed.
French doors wrap around the back of the villa, filling the rooms with natural light and drawing your attention. From the lounge area, the bedrooms and even the bathrooms, the desert is constantly framed in view. Outside, a private pool is surrounded by planting that offers privacy while still allowing glimpses of the reserve beyond.
The bathroom is almost a room in itself. A deep bath sits in a stone surround at its centre, accompanied by twin vanities, a generous walk-in shower and enough space to make getting ready feel entirely unhurried.
At First Light
The early hours belong to the wildlife, when the desert is at its coolest and most active. My morning began on horseback as the sun rose over the dunes. Later, a guided wildlife drive revealed Arabian oryx, elegant gazelles, desert lizards and the surprisingly rich birdlife that inhabits the reserve.
One of the things Al Maha does particularly well is that the experiences never feel like separate excursions. They are offered as simply different ways of discovering the reserve. Camel trekking gives a slower perspective of the landscape before ending with sundowners at the chic desert bar atop a dune, while falconry provides a fascinating insight into one of the region’s oldest traditions. Archery, guided nature walks and desert drives allow every stay to be tailored to individual interests.
Throughout it all, nothing feels staged. Guides stop because they’ve genuinely spotted movement in the distance, conversations naturally become quieter, and the focus remains firmly on the reserve rather than the activity itself.
Desert Pause
As the desert heat builds, life slows down. Some guests retreat to the privacy of their villas, while others gather around the infinity pool. It is one of the resort’s most peaceful spots, where the water seems to merge into the surrounding landscape and wildlife occasionally wanders into view while guests enjoy doing very little.
For anyone looking to escape the midday heat, the Al Maha Spa offers massages and treatments alongside a sauna, steam room, Jacuzzi and cold plunges. One of the resort’s most tranquil spaces is the relaxation lounge, where recliners overlook the pool and desert beyond. Leave enough time before or after your treatment to simply sit back and enjoy the view.
More Than a Meal
Breakfast at Al Diwaan quickly becomes one of my favourite parts of the day. Looking out across the reserve while deciding between shakshuka, smoked salmon bagels and freshly prepared egg dishes somehow made the mornings feel even slower. The à la carte menu also offered sharing plates of Middle Eastern cheeses, labneh and fresh pastries allowing guest to linger over breakfast while keeping one eye on the wildlife wandering beyond the windows.
Lunch feels relaxed but no less thoughtfully executed. The menu combines Mediterranean influences with regional flavours, offering everything from fresh seafood and generous salads to grilled meats and lighter sharing plates. Cooling dishes such as watermelon with tzatziki are particularly welcome after a morning in the dunes, while the variety means there’s just as much appeal for those wanting something more substantial.
As darkness settles across the reserve, Al Diwaan takes on a more intimate atmosphere. Beyond the terrace, the desert disappears into complete blackness, apart from the well illuminated watering hole in the distance.
The menu moves confidently between regional classics and contemporary cooking, with beautifully prepared beef kibbeh, delicately charred octopus and vibrant seasonal starters sitting alongside more traditional Emirati favourites. The slow-cooked lamb ouzi was the undisputed highlight; deeply flavoured, beautifully tender and served with fragrant rice for sharing, it was the sort of dish that perfectly captures the warmth and generosity of Arabian hospitality.
Desserts continue that balance between tradition and creativity, with options including a firm weakness of mine, warm date pudding, and an imaginative strawberry and tomato cheesecake.
The Places Between
Not every memorable moment happened on an organised activity. The open-plan lobby is one of those spaces that invites you to linger. Beautifully furnished with traditional pieces, it welcomes guests with Arabic coffee and an impressive selection of regional dates, each with its own distinct flavour profile.
Nearby, the library serves several purposes throughout the day. It offers a peaceful place to read or catch up on emails before becoming home to complimentary cookies and coffee during the afternoon, followed later by wine and cheese as guests return from their activities.
Just around the corner, Hajar Bar provides another cosy retreat, with comfortable seating indoors and a terrace outside that makes an ideal setting for a pre-dinner drink or a final nightcap beneath the stars.
These quieter spaces give Al Maha much of its personality. Never busy and never trying too hard, they allow guests to take their time and switch off fully.
A Desert Classic
Luxury hospitality has changed dramatically since Al Maha first opened its doors, yet its greatest strength is that it has never felt the need to reinvent itself. The villas remain beautifully designed, service is polished and activities are engaging without becoming overproduced. Most importantly, the resort never loses sight of the landscape that made it famous in the first place.
Today, travellers have no shortage of luxury desert resorts to choose from, yet few possess the same sense of authenticity or understanding that the desert itself is the greatest luxury on offer. After more than two decades, Al Maha still feels less like a hotel and more like a privilege with a chance to experience a quieter side of Dubai.
