Air New Zealand Launches Economy Skynest, the Ultimate Coach Flying Experience

Economy travellers can slip into a full-length bed with the arrival of the Air New Zealand Economy Skynest

Economy travellers will be able to slip into a full-length bed with the arrival of Air New Zealand’s revolutionary Economy Skynest sleep pods.

There is a moment, high above the Pacific, when the cabin lights dim and the long-haul ache begins to settle into your bones. Then the curtain parts, you step into your own private pod, and the world tilts gently toward rest. The faint scent of fresh linen. The soft hush of ventilation. The deep, unexpected comfort of lying completely flat at 35,000 feet.

From this November, Air New Zealand will rewrite the rules of economy travel with the Economy Skynest, six serene, lie-flat sleep pods nestled between the Economy and Premium Economy cabins on its new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. As you might imagine, the innovation launches on one of the planet’s longest routes – New York (JFK) to Auckland (AKL) – with booking now open.

A New Standard for Rest in the Sky

Air New Zealand chief executive Nikhil Ravishankar understands long-haul better than most. “New Zealand’s unique location means we feel every hour of these epic journeys,” he says. “Skynest is designed to make a real difference. It gives Economy and Premium Economy customers the chance to stretch out, lie completely flat, and claim a few precious hours of proper sleep mid-flight.”

Developed over years and refined with feedback from more than 200 travellers, each Skynest pod is a cocoon of calm. A full-length mattress awaits with crisp pillow, sheets and blanket — freshly changed between sessions.

Ambient lighting shifts softly to guide you into rest and ease you awake, while personal controls include USB-A and USB-C charging, a reading light, gentle ventilation, and a privacy curtain that seals the world away. A complimentary “Nestcessities” kit adds thoughtful touches: an eye mask, ear plugs, socks, therapeutic Aotea skincare and a dental kit.

Sessions are thoughtfully timed to honour natural sleep cycles — four hours each, with two available per flight initially — so you settle, sleep deeply, and wake gradually, arriving in New Zealand refreshed and ready for whatever adventure awaits.

Building on a Legacy of Innovation

Skynest continues Air New Zealand’s proud tradition of reimagining Economy. Where Skycouch once offered flexible space to stretch and lounge, Skynest now delivers true horizontal rest — a world-first in commercial aviation for travellers outside Business Class. In 2023 the airline claimed the Crystal Cabin Award for its most innovative cabin concept; Skynest raises that bar once more.

The pods sit in a calm, bunk-style layout, each equipped with its own seatbelt for safety and a crew call button within easy reach. Everything has been considered so the experience feels intuitive, private and deeply restorative — whether you are crossing the Pacific for business, family or pure wanderlust.

The Kind of Arrival You’ll Remember

Imagine drifting off to the gentle rhythm of the aircraft, waking to the first hint of New Zealand light on the horizon, your body remembering what a proper night’s sleep feels like even at altitude. The fatigue that usually clings to long-haul journeys simply isn’t there. Instead, there is lightness. Clarity. That quiet thrill of having truly rested while the world slipped past below.

Air New Zealand has always believed that how you travel should matter as much as where you are going. With Economy Skynest, the airline proves that even in the heart of Economy, luxury can be found in the simplest, most human need: deep, uninterrupted sleep.

A new era of long-haul comfort has arrived — and it begins with the simple act of lying down.
